Crafted with Heart: The Story Behind the V&A Neighbourhood Award Trophies

SHARE

Copied!

In our waterfront world, the Neighbourhood Awards are more than just a celebration of achievement. They are a tribute to the people, places, and partnerships that make our waterfront community thrive. And at the heart of this celebration is something truly special: a trophy that’s as meaningful as the award
itself.

In 2024, the brief was clear. Our aim was to reimagine the traditional trophy and weave in the artistry of local makers. The result? A vibrant collection of hand-crafted ceramic vessels, each one a modern twist on a trophy, carrying with it the story and skill of the artist behind it.

A Celebration of Local Talent

To bring this vision to life, Lerato Design Consultancy worked closely with some of Cape Town’s most inspiring creatives. Lerato Design Consultancy is a bespoke, turnkey design firm dedicated to delivering innovative, client-focused solutions. Agile and adaptable, they specialise in bridging the gap between products and consumers through strategic design and compelling storytelling.

Beloved tenant and celebrated ceramicist Clementina van der Walt brought her signature bold colour and pattern to the table, while her apprentice N’sele Adonis Mumpango impressed with elegant, minimalist shapes adorned with intricate textures and hand-engraved lines.

Adding even more character were the works of Brigitte Lilley and Antoinette du Plessis, each offering their own distinctive style. Together, this mix of voices and visions added depth, complexity, and a sense of individuality to every award.

Looking Ahead to 2025

While the full details for 2025 remain under wraps, one thing is certain: the focus on craft will continue. A few familiar faces from 2024 will return, joined by exciting new names. This year, colour will play a key role in distinguishing award categories, and for the first time, beadwork and woodwork will join ceramics to create an even richer tapestry of textures and techniques.

Why It Matters

For the recipients, these trophies are one-of-a-kind piece of art, made by hand and carrying the essence of the place they’ve helped shape. The real proof of their impact is in plain sight with trophies proudly displayed in shops, studios and head offices across the precinct. Each one stands as a small monument to community, creativity, and shared achievement.

Because at the V&A Waterfront, an award should be more than just a title. It should be a story you can hold in your hands.
